Innovation School of Management

In an organisation with highly energised and passionate individuals, how do we improve the outlook on innovation? What do we need to do to further improve the innovation culture and create vibration amongst individuals? How do we make the subject of Innovation to be talked about by everyone on a daily basis? How do we enhance the use of an innovation culture to come up with new ideas and create new products, processes or even solve existing problems? How do we create high levels of engagement amongst employees by providing the with avenues for showcasing their innovativeness? How do we make employee learning a continuous process?

The formation of the Innovation School of Management (IScM) as part of our Integrated Supply Chain management team in the Jewellery division is perhaps one route in the search for the answer to these questions.

The Innovation School of Management (IScM)

Vision : To institutionalize the culture of innovation across the organization.

The manufacturing nature of Jewellery in India is more of craft work by skilled artisans rather by engineering methods. The business was challenged by the dependability on skilled artisans who had the specific skill of crafting the jewellery manually. This challenged the industrial type of manufacturing business in jewellery. Our organization has overcome this through “Innovation” and implemented many innovative projects. But later it was revealed after careful in-depth analysis that innovation in our organization was happening in only pockets by repetitive participation from few of the individuals but not by all the energetic individuals in the organization. To motivate the employees to the high levels of engagement and making an avenue for showcasing their innovativeness, to spread the culture of Innovation in the organization, Innovation School of Management has been established in 2008 which was the brain child of Mr. LR Natrajan, the Chief Manufacturing Officer and Innovation evangelist of the organization.

Like any other academic institution the six month course trains the employees in the organization and transforms as “Innovators”.  After completion of the course, the Innovators have offered the graduation by the organization’s Managing Director in a grand ceremony.

Innovation School of Management has transformed 75 employees of the organization as Innovators through two batches and 33 innovative projects have been executed by them which are selected according to the organization business challenges and requirements. The financial benefit of 18.14 crores was realized by cost saving and inventory reduction and 110 crores in the future course of the business is expected.

With the successful execution of the two Batches of creating innovators, the organization in on the way to the next step of creating an exclusive “Innovation Center” which particularly created for providing the hands on experience on Innovation.
